SEVEN RULES FOR PREVENTING THE FLU
The best way to defend against the H1N1 or any other flu or disease is to keep yourself healthy and your immune system strong.
RULE NUMBER ONE: DO NOT USE ANTI-BACTERIAL SOAP
How does an anti-bacterial soap help with a virus? It doesn’t.
The chemical anti-bacterial agent not only kills bacteria but also kills human cells. Plus, colds and flu are viruses and not bacteria. So all you succeed in doing is over-using bacteria agents. RULE NUMBER THREE: DRINK PLENTY OF FILTERED WATER
Healthy moist membranes are harder to infect than dry tissues. In the winter months we are in hot, dry air, which dries the nose and throat tissues which helps create a perfect environment for a viral infection.
Don’t wait until you are thirsty or have a headache! Both of these are signs of dehydration. You need to drink ½ ounce of filtered water per pound of body weight daily. So if you weigh 160 pounds you need to drink 80 ounces of water a day.
RULE NUMBER FOUR: GET LOTS OF SLEEP
You can’t build a healthy immune system if you don’t give your body enough time to rest and repair. Everyone is different, if you need 8 hours sleep or 10 hours sleep, that is the amount of sleep that you require, make sure you get it.

RULE NUMBER FIVE: AVOID CONTACT WITH INFECTED PEOPLE
I know this one can be very challenging. But give wide berth to people who are coughing or sneezing.
If you are invited to someone’s home or are inviting guests to yours, check in with them the day before as you may want to reschedule. The rule of thumb is:
A person with a cold is contagious for the first three days that they have symptoms.
A person with flu is contagious from a day before they feel sick until their symptoms have resolved. The flu virus is very contagious as it easily spreads through the air. Avoid sleeping in a room with someone who has flu.
RULE NUMBER SIX: TAKE YOUR IMMUNE BUILDING NUTRIENTS DAILY
The Five Key Nutrients for Avoiding Colds and Flu
#1. Vitamin C (Calcium Ascorbate with bioflavanoids)
Vitamin C stimulates the production of interferon (a virus killer).Take 1,000 mg twice a day. If you are prone to colds and flu, I would absolutely consider taking much more. I will often take 3,000 mg three times per day.

#2. Vitamin E (d’alpha tocopherol)
Vitamin E helps promote body defenses against viral infections and in some cases it actually works as a natural flu vaccine. Take 400 IU to 800 IU per day.

#3. Zinc (citrate)
Zinc will aid in antibody production and also in the circulation of the “fighter” T-cells that are part of the immune system. Take 5 to 50 mg of zinc citrate daily.
#4. Vitamin A
Vitamin A is necessary to maintain the mucous membranes of the respiratory passages.
Take 5,000 to 50,000 IU daily.
#5. B complex vitamins (include all 11 of the B family)
The B complex vitamins provide the body with energy by aiding in the conversion of carbohydrates to glucose, which the body “burns’ to produce energy. B vitamins are necessary for normal functioning of the nervous system and may be its single most important factor for maintenance of the nerves. Take one B complex one to two times per day.
#6. Vitamin D
I shouldn’t have to mention this one. There is enough scientific evidence supporting the role of vitamin D in health. In winter, you should consider taking no less than 1,000 IU per day although 4,000 to 6,000 IU of vitamin D3 are highly recommended.
